russolo's brain :: faq What is Russolo's Brain? Russolo's Brain is an independent 'record label', in theory. Realistically, it is a hobby that involves me burning a bunch of CDs and printing sleeves for friends, myself, and people I admire. Why the name Russolo's Brain? It sounded cool to me and I was always intrigued by Russolo's Art of Noise manifesto. Who are you? My name is Adam Mokan and I currently live in Chandler, Arizona, which is a suburb of Phoenix. I was born in Flint, Michigan and resided around that area for over 27 years. I ran a somewhat legitimate record label and magazine in Flint and worked with metal and hardcore bands. I booked shows, wrote for some zines and local newspapers, and more or less just got involved in the local scene.
Why did you start Russolo's Brain? Starting a DIY label seemed like the cool thing to do in Michigan where everyone appeared to have their own label. It is also a good way to get your own music out there. It's really not complicated. If you're reading this, you should probably start you own label, too. What happened to the 'Short Attention Span' compilation? 'Short Attention Span' was going to be the first Russolo release back in late 2003. The plan was to have 30-40 artists with tracks two minutes or less. I seriously underestimated the amount of work required to get 30-40 people to deliver material on time and how to make everyone happy with compensation. Some people wanted contracts, etc. The deadline was pushed ahead for almost six months and still there were a number of problems. Eventually, I pulled the plug on the project and moved on. I apologize to anyone that contributed material and at some point in the future, the material that was received may be used. If that is the case, I will seek permission to use it once again. I just felt it was time to move on and not mislead people any longer. What happened to the planned lathe releases? My source for getting lathes cut was unable to get the job done. At that point, I tried to obtain my own lathe, but was unable to do so. (I have a couple broken machines to show for it now.) How long does it take to ship my order? I try my best to get orders out every Saturday morning. Because I have a full-time job and a family to feed, things will get delayed. If that is the case, I will do my best to let you know. If for some reason you feel mislead about a shipping time or have an issue, just drop me an email and we'll fix it. I bought a disc from you and it doesn't play! Email me and you'll get a new one. I try my best to check each copy, but when I spend the time I should be sleeping by spray painting and burning discs, shit is bound to happen. If you have a problem with a limited release or something I just cannot reproduce, you'll get your money back or something. Just ask and we'll work it out. Will you release my music? Contact me and get me a 'demo' on CDr, cassette, etc. I don't like listening to shit through myspace or other sites and since I spend a lot of time in the car each day, it helps to have a disc. How do you compensate artists? I provide 20-30% of the discs to the artist before they go on sale through the Russolo site. They can then use these discs to sell themselves, give them away, etc. I don't sign contracts because I don't believe in them. It is important that I trust someone before releasing something and they trust me. If you are paranoid about someone ripping you off, you're in the wrong genre and I probably don't want to work with you.
Can you get me a show in Phoenix? I can try. It is not easy out here to get a show going and there is no built-in crowd. If you're doing something creative and not too mainstream, I can help you out with contacts.
